500 _aABSTRACT THE NFLUENCE OF MOTHER TONGUE ON COMPREHENSION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE Kclariz P. Gatchalian Anne Gellie T. Dimabuyu Thesis Title: CHILDREN'S Author: Adviser: The study aimed to determine the influence of mother tongue on children's comprehension of the English language. Specifically, it sought to ascertain if there is a meaningful correlation between the respondent's performance in English and Kapampangan listening and reading comprehension. The respondents were chosen as according to their sections, regardless of class standing, gender, religion or culture. One hundred twenty (120) Grade 4 students were chosen as respondents of the study. To conduct this study, the researcher divided the sections A, B, C, D, into twO groups. Sections A and C for listening comprehension, and sections B and D for reading comprehension. The researcher used narratives written in both Kapampangan ad English to assess their reading and listening comprehension. The questionnaire derived from narratives, was utilized to get statistical tools such as percentage, frequency and mean. The findings revealed that the respondents have better comprehension in their native language (Kapampangan) than in English. It was also revealed that there is no significant relationship between the respondent's mother tongue (Kapampangan) and English in terms of their listening and reading comprehension.
