500 _aABSTRACT Thesis Title: Using Direct Method in Teaching English Language Author: Adviser: Riza S. Balala Ma. Leilani V. Agillon The goal of this research was to examine and analyze the contents of the teaching demonstration videos uploaded on YouTube platform using the Direct Method of teaching English. From 20o17 to 2021, these videos showed a classroom setup with teachers and a limited number of students. The researcher used a checklist to answer the problems in this study, which took a qualitative approach. The research focused on how the Direct Method principles were applied in the lesson, the most common techniques used by teachers, and how the students responded to the activities prepared by the teachers. The results of applying the Direct Method principles showed that all seven videos used the target language (English), only everyday vocabulary and sentences were taught, and new teaching points were introduced. The most common technique was question-and-answer exercise followed by reading aloud because these are meant to elicit immediate responses from the students. Based on the observation of the students' responses or behaviors to the activities prepared by the teacher, it can be deduced that the majority of the students in all seven videos can read and write simple sentences in English. This study may provide insights into the use of the Direct Method in English teaching and learning, particularly techniques that help students develop or improve their everyday vocabulary and oral skills.
