Department of Resource Engineering and Agricultural Mechanization, College of Engincering and Computer Studies, Pampanga State Agricultural University, PAC, Magalang, Pampanga. August 2022. "Design, fabrication, and evaluation of vertical box farming system for giant mud crab (Seylla serrata) Adviser: Dr. Anthony C. Nicdao Along with the rapid growth of population is accompanied by higher demand for food, thus, more people will be living in urban areas. Such that, a need for a smart and sustainable urban farming is required to meet the demands of the people. A new method that has been proposed to address the issue of sustainability and to meet the growing food demand is, designing and implementing vertical farms. Vertical farming is a concept that involves cultivating plants with livestock on vertically inclined surfaces such as in skyscrapers in urban areas, where there is a lack of available land and space. This study aimed to design, fabricate and evaluate a vertical box farming system in order to increase mud crab production with respect to the growth, optimum weight and mortality rate as affected by different crab stages. Moreover, the performance of vertical box farming with respect to the S. serrata production in terms of salinity, temperature, pH level, and ammonia level was taken into account. The results showed that treatment 3 (adults) was observed to have highest mean with 59.72g and 40% mortality rate after 9 weeks. The design parameters, on the other hand, was maintained at ideal condition between 17.7lppt, 29.02°C, 7.34, <0.25 ppm for salinity, temperature, pH, and ammonia level respectively. Therefore, vertical box farming system was found to be economically viable.
