ABSTRACT Thesis Title : Stylistic-Pragmatic Analysis of COVID-19 Online Newspaper Headlines Author Adviser : Aliessa P. Waje : Asst. Prof. Jamayma M. Gatchalian In December 2019, the media and the public were sparked with the big news about a new identified and infectious disease, the Covidi9-nCoV or Novel Coronavirus 2019 that evolved in a global outbreak. Media usually present daily updates and information about COVID-19 and it has become the daily topic of all news media which significantly drew the interest of the researcher to investigate the headlines of online newspapers with relevance to the COVID-19. This study used the classifications of newspaper style of T. A. Znameskaya (20o5) and the developed stylistic features of Laminchhane (2017) to determine the styles used and their functions in the headlines of Philippine Daily Inquirer. The Speech Act Theory developed by John Searle (1969) was used also to determine the aims of these headlines among their readers. A total of twenty (20) headlines, checklist and data sheet were the instruments used for this study. The findings revealed that in lexical features, nouns were usually names of persons and organizations. Meanwhile in rhetorical features, only alliteration was found which makes headlines more memorable. Headlines were often written in simple sentences as a suitable way to describe the "who did what method". These features contributed to present the important details of news articles in a concise manner. On the other hand, representatives speech act was found among the headlines since it conveys information, provides description and states what has been said and done by a public figure and organization that relatively worked during this pandemic.
