Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasite infection in imported goats of PL480 program in Region 10 [manuscript] / Vanessa Marie R. Sumagang.

This study determined the presence of gastrointestinal parasites in imported Saanen goats loaned to farmers by National Dairy Authority through PL480 Program after they entered the Philippines. The program recipients are farmers from Region 10, particularly from the provinces of Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, and Cagayan De Oro City. There were 175 samples collected from a total population of 384 Saanen goats from these provinces. The samples were submitted to the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory of Central Mindanao University, Maramag, Bukidnon. Samples were examined using McMaster and fecal flotation techniques. Results showed that all the animals under the program were managed under the same system mandated by the National Dairy Authority. The recipients are required to implement cut and carry feeding system, elevated housing, and confinement system. An overall prevalence rate for gastrointestinal parasites of 87.43% was determined. In addition, three species of gastrointestinal parasites were detected, namely Strongylid spp., Moniezia spp. and Coccidia spp. with prevalence rates of 80.57%, 11.43% and 80.57%, respectively. In terms of the deworming program used by the farms, those that were given oral suspensions (Fenbendazole) had lower prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths while those that were given subcutaneous injections (Doramectin) had a higher percentage of gastrointestinal parasites. In comparison to the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites between male and female goats, females were detected with a higher number of gastrointestinal parasites than the males. Mean egg count of sample population for Strongylid spp., Moniezia spp. and Coccidia spp. were 251.52, 4,058.16, and 525/2g¢ of feces, respectively.
