Grow lights are used to supplement the light needs of a plant. LED and CFL are known for being cost-efficient. Lettuce is one of the most consumed high-value crops in some parts of the world. In this study, romaine lettuce was used to compare the effects of different grow lights. This research was conducted in Brgy. San Francisco, Magalang, Pampanga. The researcher used a quantitative study design coupled with Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for statistical calculations. The parameters measured were plant height, number of leaves, quality of the leaf, and root length. The experiment consisted of three (3) treatment groups namely LED, CFL, and sunlight. Results showed that LED-grown lettuce had the highest mean root length, mean increase in height, and mean increase in the number of leaves. Results also showed that LED had a higher light intensity than CFL. Sensory evaluation showed that LED had the highest mean rating in terms of color; while sunlight had the highest in terms of aroma, texture, taste, and general acceptability. All treatments were significant at a 1% value F-test. In cost analysis, LED was more economically viable than CFL. Despite having a longer payback period of LED than CFL, LED still had a higher annual income of Php 258.94 than CFL. In conclusion, LED grow light is a more viable and effective option compared to CFL, and it can be considered as a good supplemental light for deficient sunlight especially during the wet season. CFL grow light can be also used as long as it is 770 lumens or higher. Likewise, it is recommended to plant in different weather conditions using different high-value crops for further studies.
