<br/><br/> ABSTRACT  Thesis Title:  A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Bargirl English in a Red-light  District  Carina F. Calado  Carlo D. De Dios  Author  Adviser  :  :  This study examined the bargirl English used in the red-light district in Walking  Street, Angeles City, Pampanga by analyzing the lexical, syntactic and phonological  features present in the language. It also sought to investigate how the Bargirl social  identity affects their language and speech and assert their identity. The respondents of  the study were ten (10) bargirls who work at Walking Street, Angeles City Pampanga,  speak their regional languages (Kapampangan and Visayan), and transact with Western  customers. This study used a theoretical framework that is significantly dependent on  Vygotsky theory of Social Constructivism (1967), the Lectal framework of Llamzon  (1997), and the Sub-varieties of Philippine English of Bautista (1996). It also utilizeda  qualitative method and collected data through face-to-face interviews and audio  recordings. Findings shows that: ) PE phonology is distinct from GAE phonology in  certain ways. It was confirmed that regional language of the Bargirls can affect their  English; in this study, the Visayan bargirls occasionally substitute /e/ to //,// to //,  and /æ/ to /a/; 2) the familiarity of the PE users with conventional word production  mechanisms and their intrinsic linguistic creativity increase word formation mechanisms  and result in new vocabularies, as the bargirl produced words yellow feet, soksok, and  boom-boom; 3) there are similarities in the syntactic structures of the Bargirl English  and ; 4) the social identity of people can affect their language and speech and they assert  their identity by using their unique language.
