Samson, Ann Janet S, August 2021. COMPARATIVE GERMINATION ASSESSMENT OF SMOOTH NARRA (Prerocarpus indicus forma indicus) AND PRICKLY NARRA (Pterocarpusindicus forma echinatus) USING DIFFERENT PRETREATMENT. Bachelor of Science in Forestry major in Forest Resource Management, Pampanga State Agricultural University. Adviser: Allain James T. Aquino, RF Due to illegal logging and over-exploitation of the natural stand, economically important species like Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) have been listed as vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The Study was conducted from May 20 to July 20, 2021, at Barangay Balutu Concepcion Tarlac to determine which pretreatment can increase and improve the germination rate of the two varieties of Narra (Smooth and Prickly). Four hundred fifty (450) Smooth Narra and Four hundred fifty (450) Prickly Narra seeds were used. Treatments were arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), namely; T1No pretreatment (control), T2Scarification (Using nail clipper), T3Hot water treatment (Ssec) (100C), T4Soaking on tap water for 12 h (16°C), T5Pre chilling treatment (2 days) (4°C). The treatments were replicated three times. A total of (8) parameters was measured: germinative percentage, germinative capacity, germinative energy, energy period, mortality rate, plant height, plant diameter, and several leaves. The result showed that the application of pre germination to the Narra seeds significantly contributed to increase and improve the germination rate of the Narra seed. The prickly Narra variety was performing relatively better than Smooth Narra. In all parameters, no significant interaction effects were found. Comparing the general effect of pre germination treatments, the seed treated with soaking on tap water (Treatment 4) gained the highest germinative percentage, germinative capacity, germinative energy, and energy period. However, the result showed that seed treated with the different pretreatment did not significantly differ in all the eight parameters measured. Meaning, the effect of different pre-treatment on the Narra seeds is statistically the same. It was concluded that soaking seed on tap water for 12 h before sowing helps to increase and improve the germination rate of Narra (Smooth and Prickly).
