This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus isolates in early~-life stress of BALB/c mice} three isolates Lactobacillus were administered separately to experimental animals. Administration of Lactobacillus commenced at four weeks of age and ended at eight weeks of age. Post administration, mice were subjected to various behavioral tests starting from the least stressful to most stressful test. At tenth week of age, the experiment was completed and the mice were sacrificed. Result of the behavioral test revealed that stressed mice administered with the Lactobacillus isolates such as with JL. paracaseiand UL. bulgaricus, had increased locomotor activities compared with the untreated stressed mice. In elevated plus maze test, L. casei-treated mice had reduced anxiety-like behavior compared with lL. paracaseiand Lb. bulgaricus-treated mice. While in the forced swimming test, the three Lactobacillus isolates did not Clearly show that they can reduce depression-like behavior in stressed mice. However, L. paracaseiand L. bulgaricustreated mice had less floating time compared with L. caseitreated and untreated stressed mice. These results suggest that ingestion of the three Lactobacillus isolates could enhance the locomotor activity and reduce anxiety-like behavior but not depression-like behavior.
