Crops should, as far as possible, be treated in regular swaths. By using a boom type sprayer, uniform applications can be obtained with constant system performance and constant forward speed. This study aimed to design, fabricate and evaluate the performance of a tractor mounted boom type sprayer. The performance of the machine was evaluated using three pressure rating of 17 psi, 27.6 psi, and 38.2psi. The parameters given consideration were field capacity, field efficiency, discharge rate and economic viability of the machine. The data gathered in the performance evaluation was processed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine the differences among the treatments used in the study. Based on the results, it was found out that the mean discharge rate of the machine was 38.19 li/hr and the lowest discharge rate was 32.34 li/hr. obtained at the 17psi pressure. The mean actual field capacity of the machine was 1.72ha/hr with the highest actual capacity of 1.733ha/hr at 27.68 psi pressure. The mean field efficiency of the machine was 85.38%; and the highest field capacity of the machine was obtained at 27.68psi pressure with 85.94% field efficiency. It was concluded that the boom type sprayer is best used at 17 psi pressure since no significant difference was established among the different pressures used in the study. It is much recommended to use herbicide in the boom type sprayer, extend the frame length and for additional safety of the boom sprayer, and to make a boom sprayer that can be folded horizontally.
