This study was conducted to determine the demographic profile, perception of cattle farmers toward the challenges of the Philippine cattle industry, and problems identified by cattle raisers. A total 107 cattle raisers who attended the "First Philippine Smallhold Cattle Raisers Congress" were purposively selected and interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Data gathered in the study was statistically analyzed using frequency distribution. Highlights of the results were: Majority of the respondents were backyard raisers who practiced extensive farming.Their primary mode of marketing was through middlemen and determined the value of their cattle by means of live weight and visual estimation based on the animal's body condition. The top five problems identified by the respondents were: lack of pasture area, expensive feed cost, lack of forages and seeds, lack of breeding program, and lack of government support.
