General note ABSTRACT ESGUERRA, DELVIN NICOLE C. Department of Resource Engineering and Agricultural Mechanization, College of Engineering and Computer Studies, Pampanga State "DEVELOPMENT OF BIOPLASTIC PRODUCTION FROM BANANA PEEL" Agricultural University, PAC Magalang, Pampanga. June 2023. Adviser: Dr. Solomon L. Roque Co-Adviser: Dr. Mari Rowena C. Tanquilut The study aimed to create and develop bioplastics from banana peels with different amounts of plasticizers, such as glycerol, using saba and latundan varieties. The study was conducted from August 2022 to May 2023 at Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU). The researcher assigned each treatment three replications. A,Bj used 3 ml of glycerol, while A¡B2 and A¡B, used 4 ml and 5 ml, respectívely. Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was the experimental design used in the study. The researcher used beakers and stirring rods to create and mix the bioplastic. Each treatment was made by mixing various amounts of plasticizer. The mixture was then placed on the wax paper. The researcher also used a drying oven for 45 minutes in order for the bioplastic to dry. Results show that A¡Bs (5 ml) had the highest amount of glycerol content in the mixture among the other treatments. Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that the most effective amount of glycerol in the production of bioplastics was observed to be 5 ml for the reason that it has good mechanical properties. The more plasticizer there was, the better the mechanical properties of the bioplastic. Also, in terms of its physical properties, the soil burial method was used in performing the biodegradation test. A¡B, (5 ml) degraded in just one month because glycerol plays a vital role in the biodegradation of the bioplastics. Moreover, statistical analysis of the data in terms of tensile strength revealed that the higher the amount of glycerol it contains, the lower its tensile strength. On the other hand, elongation at break found that as glycerol content increased, the elongation also increased. Water absorption: however, latundan has a much higher water absorption rate than saba, which means the thinner its peel, the more water it can absorb. Furthermore, the total cost of production of 18 bioplastics was found to be Php 901.32 when the material cost, labor cost, and energy cost were included. With this amount computed, each bioplastic costs PHP 50.
