General note ABSTRACT Thesis Title: Attitudes toward the Use of English and Awareness of Philippine Engish Author: Adviser: Ma. Loren G. Gagui Sylvia S. De Guzman This study described the attitudes toward the use of English and awareness of Philippine English (PhE) among student and teacher respondents. The study învolved a total of 100 participants; specifically, 50 students and 50 teachers from a state university in Pampanga. A mixed method of qualitative and quantitative approaches was used in the study where a researcher-made questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used in descrībing attitudes toward the use of English together with a Philippine English awareness survey questionnaire. The findings revealed that the participants were loyal to the English language. Participants talked about using the English language to express themselves more clearly and that they would combine the English language with their native language from time to time. Language pride was evident as participants admitted to feeling proud, cool, and intelligent whenever they use the English language especially when they could do so in a flawless manner. Despite that, the student's fear is still present when the use of English is oral as opposed to written. The participants were moderately aware of PhE in terms of meanings, features, and uses. Additionally, similar level of awareness of PhE was found in the two groups of respondents.
