General note | ABSTRACT Thesis Title: Author: Adviser: A Phonological Analysis of Phiilippine English in Spotify Podcast Ayra Mae E. Magat Dr. Alawi C. Canlas Even though Philippine English (PhE) has already been established, there is still a lot of its linguistic aspects that needs further investigation. This is in line with the urgent need to adopt an extended PhE Model caused by emerging sub-varieties of the Philippine English. Thus, this study analyzes the phonological aspect of PhE to identify its progress as an evolving variety of English from American English (AmE), and create a concrete definition of how its phonological features are applied in utterances. The research covered four (4) podcast episodes from two Philippine-based podcast channels in Spotify. The Generative Theory of Phonological Rules (Chomsky and Halle, 1964), supported with Lass' (1984) set of Phonological Processes, and World Englishes (Kachru, 1985) were used as the framework of the study. The analysis of the corpus revealed 411 Occurrences of phonological processes, wherein deletion was observed to have the most with 373, assimilation with 29, dissimilation with 1, and insertion with 8 occurrences. It was also observed that the phonological features of both PhE and AmE were abundantly applied in the utterances of the speakers. Despite that, it was inferred that PhE is becoming more distinct as a systematic, evolving, language as stated by Flores (2014). This study is meant to raise awareness and echo the call for more in-depth analysis of PhE for the establishment of its extended language model. |
