General note ABSTRACT INFLUENCE OF PERCEIVED SOCIETAL STANDARDS ON BODY DISSATISFACTION OF THE YOUTH ROSELL MAE P. CUNANAN Pampanga State Agricultural University Bachelor of Science in Development Communication May 2023 Angelo S. Zapatos Title Researcher School Degree Date Completed Adviser The study aimed to determine the influence of perceived societal standards on body dissatisfaction of the youth. Specifically, it identified the respondents': perceived social standards regarding body image; internalizations of societal standards; body monitoring; appearance comparison; body dissatisfaction measurement; relationship between perceived societal standard vs. internalization of societal message and body monitoring; and relationship between appearance comparison and body dissatisfaction. Quantitative research method was used in the study, and a survey questionnaire was disseminated to the 272 youths in Gatiawin, Arayat, Pampanga. Data were analyzed using Frequency Distribution Table, mean and Pearson Chi-square. Findings of the study revealed that most of the respondents have acquired standards of beauty in the media. They agreed that their perceived social standards influence their internalization of societal messages. It was found that yyouth sometimes monitored their bodies as they sometimes compared their appearance from their peers, family and media, and found that the youth were dissatisfied with their bodies. Moreover, the results revealed that there is a highly significant relationship between perceived social standards and their internalization of societal message; perceived social standards and their body surveillance; appearance comparison and body dissatisfaction. As such, it is recommended for the locality to lead information drives for the awareness of the influence of perceived societal standards on the body dissatisfaction of the youth.
