General note ABSTRACT TITLE DETERMINANTS OF RICE FARM SCALES AUTHOR ADVISER SCHOOL IN ESCALER, MAGALANG, PAMPANGA JERLYN SIBAYAN HIPOLITO LESLIE V. TORRES, MPS PAMPANGA STATE AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY DEGREE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS YEAR COMPLETED JUNE 2023 The study was conducted to analyze and compare the socio-economic characteristics of rice farmers in Escaler, Magalang, Pampanga, to identify the determinants of rice farm scales, and to determine their level of rice production. The researcher used Slovin's formula to determine the sample needed to conduct the study. A total of 92 smal-scale farmers with a total land area of 2.0 ha and below, and 63 medium- scale farmers with a total land area of2.01 ha and above, were the respondents of the study and they were located within the barangay and lowland area. The researcher used a structured questionnaire to meet the objectives of the study. T-test was used to identify and compare the socio-economic characteristies and production level of the small-scale and medium-scale farmers, while cost and return analysis was used to determine the difference of net profit per hectare of the small-scale and medium-scale farmers. Probit Regression Analysis was used to analyze the determinants of rice farm scales such as the farmers number of years in education, household head, sex, PCIC membership and monthly income. Majority of the respondents are in the age bracket of 41 to 55 years old and there is no significant differences since small-scale and medium-scale farmers are not far apart from their ages. Most of the farmers are male, married, high school and elementary graduates, and have 6 to 10 years in education. They earn a monthly income of P5,001 to PIS,000 and the family size of the majority is composed of 4-6 members. The significant difflerences at 1% level indicates that small-scale farmers have higher monthly income since most of them have other work aside from farming. Majority of the farmers have 21 to 40 years in farming, and owned 1.01 to 3 ha of land areas. Medium-scale farmers have higher volume of production compared to small-scale farmers. Cost and return analysis showed that the medium-scale farmers have higher profit since the farm size matters, however both small-scale and medium-scale farmers had huge losses as compared normal cropping season due to the two consecutive typlhoons which were encountered by the respondents, The occurrence of typhoons is the main problem of the respondents. Farmers recommend that support from government specifically financial assistance and input subsidies should be given in order for them to cope from their losses.
