General note ABSTRACT Thesis Title: Correlation between Reading Comprehension and Psychosocial Factors Author: Lawrence Trapal Adviser: Ms. Anne Gellie T. Dimabuyu The prevailing use of the English language around the world has created a demand for workers and scholars to be well-versed in using it. These same demands are present for all countries. In the Philippines, pressure is even greater to enhance the national rankings in English reading comprehension. This study assessed reading comprehension and correlated it with psychosocial factors in one of the colleges in a state university in Pampanga, Philippines. Results showed no significant difference (p>0.05) in terms of reading comprehension when grouped according to sex. However, there is a significant difference when student-respondents are grouped according to degree program (p<0.05) and socioeconomic status (p<0.005). This indicates a potential avenue for improvement of reading comprehension through specialized courses and by lessening the consequences of having a low household income to provide the students the luxury of reading materials that eventually improve their reading comprehension. Finally, results showed a significant relationship between psychosocial factors (home, classroom and school environments) and reading comprehension (p<0.05; rs = -0.163). These findings suggest that one way to improve reading comprehension is to target improving the psychosocial health of the student-respondents. The researcher recommends further testing with a broader scope of sample population as well as the supplementation of the quantitative data with qualitative information obtained through interviews to help triangulate the findings.
