Formatted contents note | Use of detergents, substandard/lack of septic tanks, and solid waste leachate are typically sources of wastewater which are then discharged back into the environment that cause ecological damages in aquatic ecosystems such as groundwater, rivers, lakes and seas. Poor wastewater disposal practices can lead to a widespread problem that threatens the environment and human health. Public involvement to address such threat is vital. Measuring the commitment of the communities on environmental protection and rehabilitation programs should be critically take in consideration. Their participation vastly contributes to the success of such programs. As covered by the Government's Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program, Abacan River in Angeles City stresses the need for its rehabilitation and protection. This study deployed the principle of Willingness to Pay (WTP) - Contingent Valuation Method that measures the commitment of the community to a particular program through monetary contributions. Selected households along the Tiver participated in the study where majority of the families were categorized as poor (referred on NEDA family income classification). Results show that the majority of households along the river preferred to pay voluntarily an amount of maximum range from P1-499 (cheapest option) for the rehabilitation and protection of Abacan River - this dictates a weak engagement of the residents to such programs. Also, the study evaluated wastewater disposal practices where untreated detergent wastewater discharges, indistinct structure of their septic tanks, and animal wastes are among the main contributory factors of wastewater from households. The finding shows no significant relationship between the household's WTP and their knowledge about current wastewater disposal. However, results remarked the influence of socioeconomic status of the household on their engagement level in environmental programs for Abacan River's ecological stability. The Study reiterates that the low quality of life of the people impedes a successful environmental program. Keyword: Detergent, Septic tanks, Socioeconomic, Valuation, and Wastewater. |
