Formatted contents note The antidiabetic potential of spray-dried Coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) leaf extract was evaluated using alloxan-induced diabetic mice (Mus musculus). Coleus leaves were collected, washed, spray-dried and subjected to aqueous extraction. A total of 15 threemonth-old ICR female mice with similar body weight were randomly distributed in three treatment groups with five replicates each. Treatment 1 was assigned as the positive control (diabetic mice fed with normal diet and treated with 1 IU/day insulin). Treatment 2 and 3 were given 100 mg/kg/day and 200 mg/kg/day spray-dried Coleus leaf extract, respectively. Treatment was done for a period of 28 days. The fasting blood glucose level, body weight, feed and water intake were monitored and recorded. The collected data was subjected to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) in completely randomized design (CRD). Treatment means were compared through Tukey's Test (HSD). At day 14 post treatment, findings revealed that there was further increase in blood glucose level in T2 (492.7 mg/dl) and T3 (553 mg/dl). Based on the results of this study, spray-dried Coleus showed no potential anti-diabetic effect. Dugay, Sheldon Lyle M., 2021.
