Formatted contents note | The study focused on the assessment of road hazards, and evaluation of bridge status as well as their physical description. The study is limited in determining the hazards on the alignment of the bridge, road environment hazards, hazards on the bridge signs, and bridge roadside hazards. The study also includes the condition classification of the bridge deck, bridge railing, and sidewalk in terms of their cracks and steel corrosion losses. Different research instruments were used to conduct the study and these are observation, field survey, questionnaires and QGIS. Questionnaires are used to identify the road hazards on the bridges that are answered by a selective respondent or the person that frequently observes the bridges. Observation of the hazards is conducted to identify the potential hazards on the bridges. A field survey was used to locate the existing bridges in the municipality, to measure the crack widths of bridge structure elements as well as the height of hazardous poles and posts. The Quantum GIS (QGIS) is used to process the collected data and generate maps. GIS-based maps were created for a better presentation of road hazards, the bridge risk level, and bridge condition classification. Based on the gathered data, some bridges exceed their service life spans, are identified as single-lane bridges, and possess potential hazards. The identified hazards are the hazards on bridge sight distance, hazard in the absence of road delineation, hazardous expansion joints, hazardous poles and posts, hazardous trees, hazard on the water courses, hazard on culvert end walls, hazardous frangible steel sign, hazard on the absence of load capacity sign, and hazard on the poor railing and barrier connection. The result of the bridge condition assessment is mostly fair classifications, but some bridges are classified as bad. And the majority of the bridges are categorized as low-risk. These findings may be useful in resolving the risk and controlling bridge conditions. In order to mitigate the risk and hazards associated with bridges, the municipality must install necessary signage such as load capacity signs, narrow bridge signs, and other hazard signages. To ensure the safety of the vehicle occupants, controlling or removing hazards on the bridges is essential. And patching of cracks on the bridges is recommended to prevent deterioration of rebar due to water penetration on decks, railings, and sidewalk elements. |
