Formatted contents note The study described the topographical location and gross anatomy of the kidneys of islandborn New Zealand rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The topographic location of the kidneys was identified in relation to surrounding organs and tissues. Both the kidneys of the island-born New Zealand rabbits are located retroperitoneally. In comparison, the right kidney is situated craniomedially and dorsally while the left kidney is positioned caudolaterally which results in asymmetric localization. Both kidneys of the 12 island-born New Zealand rabbits have a smooth surface, are firm, reddish brown in color and have a typical kidney-bean shape, with the right one being more flattened in the cranio-caudal direction. The total means and the standard deviation of the right and left kidneys' weight were 5.67 + 1.44 g and 6.08 + 1.00 g, respectively; the left kidney was heavier than the Tight kidney. Results of morphometric study showed the length, width, and thickness of the right kidney were 31.38 + 1.77, 21.36 + 1.60, and 14.39 + 1.44 mm, respectively and the left kidney were 29.91 + 1.78, 21.23 + 1.29, and 15.1 + 1.77 mm, respectively. Data showed the left kidney of the island-born New Zealand rabbit was longer and wider in width and thickness than the right kidney. The right kidney had a larger dorsoventral size (length) compared to the left kidney. The weight, length, width, and thickness of the right and left kidneys of male and female island-born New Zealand rabbits were statistically comparable.
