DOMALAON, Department of Geodetic Engineering, College of Engineering and Computer Studies, Pampanga State Agricultural University, June 2022, "GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATIONS SYSTEMS BASED IDENTIFICATION OF SURFACE URBAN HEAT ISLAND PHENOMENON IN ANGELES CITY, PAMPANGA" Adviser: ROMEMARIE S. MACMAC, MBM, GE, REA, REB The demand for fast paced urbanization has taken its toll upon our cities, one of them is the Urban Heat Islands which pertains to when concentration of built ups is significantly warmer than their surroundings. The study primarily aimed to investigate the Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI) Phenomenon in Angeles City; a first class highly urbanized city in the province of Pampanga, but remains politically independent from the said province. Landsat 8 image data from March 02, 2022 were used to cafculate Land Surface Temperature (LST) as SUH! measurement. LSTs were determined with remote sensing techniques, using freely available satellite images and airbome based sensors, primarily the Landsat 8 for its Thermal Infrared Sensors (TIRS) that can be accessed through the USGS Earth Explorer portal. The images were processed inside the Quantum GIS software to depict LST distribution map of Angeles City. A GIS-based Local Climate Zones (LCZs) classification was adapted to analyze how different the LSTs are distributed. LCZs define specific built ups that has its own specific descriptive characterization of the physical nature of cities. The mapping of LCZs in Angeles City was done in QGIS software with various references such as satellite images from Google Earth and maps such as the Angeles City land use map and zoning map of 2010-2020. With the LST and LCZ data, statistical tests were done using online algorithms to analyze relationship between the two and strengthen the proof of LST trend, in the identified LCZs within Angeles City, which was proven to have significant differences. Results show large variations in LSTs among the classified LCZs. In terms of land cover types, 25.414°C was detected the lowest average LST from LCZ A (Dense Trees) and highest is from LCZ C (Bush, Scrub) that emitted an average LST of 31.641°C. Regarding built types, LCZ 2 (Compact midrise) is the warmest with average emittance LST of 31.250°C, and LCZ 7 (Lightweight lowrise) with lowest average LST of 29.657°C. The study recommends seed spraying of endemic perennial crops in the vast open plots of land in city adjacent, placement of plant canopies in inner cities, and conduction of another LCZ mapping by able bodies and agencies.
