Formatted contents note The abundance of microplastics in different environmental compartments were recorded worldwide. However, research studies in the Philippines regarding microplastics in the freshwater systems are limited, albeit it has the most rivers that contribute plastic wastes to the ocean and accounts for more than one-third of plastic inputs in Asia. The study assessed the microplastic concentration of Quitangil River in Sto. Nifio, Magalang, Pampanga. The river water samples were collected on the same day and underwent wet sieving with distilled water. The microplastics were extracted from the samples by chemical digestion and density separation. Subsequently, the extracted microplastics were examined under a dissecting microscope and characterized and quantified according to shape and color. The results show that the microplastic concentration in the nver vanes from 4 to 20 particles per liter, where foam and white microplastics were the most dommant shape and color, respectively.
