Formatted contents note This study was conducted to determine the topography and gross anatomy of the heart and spleen of the island-born New Zealand White (NZW) rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). A total of twelve non-descript apparently healthy and normal six male and six female island-born NZW rabbits, weighing 2.3 to 2.5kgs were used in this study. The data gathered were: location, shape, colour, consistency, mean morphometries (weight, length, width, and thickness) of the heart and spleen. A median-longitudinal incision was made to expose the location of heart and spleen in the thoracic and abdominal cavity. The weight and morphometries of the male and female rabbits' organs were obtained, statistically analyzed and compared using independent sample t test through statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS). The heart of rabbit is situated in the middle mediastinum of the thoracic cavity and described as conical and elongated with pointed apex. The spleen of the rabbit is situated on the greater curvature of the body of the stomach. Specifically, it lies on the left cranial portion of the abdominal cavity which was described as elongated irregular oval shape and brownish red in colour. Statistical analysis revealed that the difference in mean weight, length, and width of the heart of male and female rabbits were comparable, however, significant difference in mean thickness was noted (p<0,05). Moreover, the average length, width, and thickness of spleen of male and female rabbits was comparable; but the mean weight was significantly different (p<0,05).RS: Sulit, Lovelyn L. 2021.
