Formatted contents note | Breaking of seed dormancy through appropriate, cheap and easily handled methods of pre-treatment remain a very important tool for rapid domestication of endangered useful species by local people. Most tropical forest species have recalcitrant seeds which do not germinate readily even under favourable conditions, hence the need for pre-treating seeds (Olayode and Gbadamosi, 2009). The study was conducted to determine the effects of pre-treatments on the germination and initial growth of chico ( Manikara zapota) at Barangay Buensuceso, Arayat, Pampanga from the months of April to July 2021. The experiment was laid in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Thirty seeds were used for every treatment. The treatments are as follows: T1No Pre-treatments (control), T2-Wet and Dry (soaking in Tap water within 12 hours and Air dry again with another 12 hours), T3Soaking in tap water for 24 hours, andT4 - Nicking - cutting of the seed from the seed coat The results revealed that the T2 - Wet and dry (soaking in tap water within 12 hours and air dry again within another 12 hours) produced significantly higher germination for percentage and germinative capacity at 1% significance level. On the other hand, T4 - nicking resulted in significantly lower germination percentage and germinative capacity at 1% significance level . Thus in germinating chico seeds, wet and dry (soaking in tap water within 12 hours and air dry again within another 12 hours ) treatment is recommended . This assures higher seed germination. The effects of pre-treatments on growth parameters were also insignificant. Growth parameters, including Plant height, and stem diameter were not significant across treatments. In other hand Number of Leaves found significant differences specifically in Day 15 and Day 29 respectively. |
