Formatted contents note The study was conducted in Panalicsican, Concepcion, Tarlac to compare horizontal farming and vertical farming in hydroponics under shade net condition. It aimed to design and evaluate an automated drip irrigation system, determine the yield of lettuce and determine the limitation of automated drip irrigation system in vertical and horizontal farming in hydroponics. The study was conducted from July to September, 2020. The experimental area covered by the horizontal farming system and the vertical farming system was 0.4682 m? and 0.9254 m2, respectively. Three set-ups of vertical farming and horizontal farming were fabricated and installed in the greenhouse at Panalicsican Concepcion, Tarlac. Based on the result of the study the following are concluded: the growth and good performance of lettuce, Grand Rapid variety, was affected by the time of irrigation schedule. The often the time of irrigation, the greater the yield result. Treatment 1 in Horizontal Farming provided the most favorable time of irrigation to the growth performance of Grand Rapids. There are no significant differences in each treatment in terms of number of leaves. The systems were able to provide favorable condition to lettuce and it was also economically viable The total cost of fabricating the horizontal and vertical farming were P 3 896.55 and P 3 988.48, respectively which includes labor and materials. The horizontal farming system can be paid off after 1.55 years while vertical farming system 1.41 years. It is therefore recommended that, a solar power in the system should be installed to ensure a continuous operation regardless of power interruption. Another thing to consider is the life stage of the crops in applying nutrient solution.
