505 0# - FORMATTED CONTENTS NOTE
Formatted contents note This study aimed to determine the contamination level reduction of selected high valued aroid cultures treated with antimicrobial agents. It is a quantitative type of research following a quasi-experimental design using a 2x4x3 factorial experiment in Completely Randomized Design. Three hundred sixty anthurium seeds (180 Anthurium hookeri and 180 Anthurium plowmanii) and 360 philodendron seeds (180 Philodendron Jose Buono and 180 Philodendron Burle Marx) were randomly assigned to the following treatments with three replications and five seeds per replicate: Treatment 1 (antibacterial), Treatment 2 (antifungal) and Treatment 3 (antibacterial/antifungal) and control group (no treatment). Factor A is the aroid variety while Factor B is the kind of antimicrobial agent. The study revealed that micropropagation of Aroid varieties Anthurium hookeri and Anthurium plowmanii and Philodendron Jose Buono and Philodendron Burle Marx using two types of antimicrobial agents, the fungicide methyl thiophanate and bactericide rifampicin, on culture media resulted in the reduction of bacterial and fungal contaminants (Erwinia sp. and Cladosporium ssp., Fusarium ssp. and Aspergillus ssp.) ensuring higher percentage seed germination and callus growth, thereby leading to higher percent survival. Hence, it is recommended that application of fungicide methyl thiophanate and bactericide rifampicin is suggested to reduce the contamination of bacteria Erwinia sp. and fungi Cladosporium ssp., Fusarium ssp. and Aspergillus ssp. in the plant culture media. In commercial micropropagation, it is advised to culture high valued aroid variety due to its high potential.
