500 ## - GENERAL NOTE
General note Alkaline-ionized water is known to have several anti-cancer effects, reactive oxygen species-scavenging activity, and reduce blood glucose levels. Citrus maxima, also known as "suha", has been determined to have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antioxidant and antidiabetic effects on different animal models. The study aimed to establish the antidiabetic potential of alkaline-ionized water with Citrus maxima peel ethanolic extract on alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Fifteen laboratory rats randomly assigned into five treatments were used to determine the effects of alkaline-ionized water and Citrus maxima ethanolic extract on weight, feed intake, water intake, blood glucose, and hispathology of pancreas. Animals in Treatments 1, 2, 3 and 4 were assigned as the diabetic groups. Treatment 0 was designated as negative control group receiving only distilled water. Treatments 1 and 2 were treated with extract by means of oral gavage while receiving distilled water and alkaline water via drinking water, respectively. The animals in Treatment 3 and 4 were given insulin two times a day to maintain the normal blood glucose while receiving distilled water and alkaline water, respectively. Data was analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD for post-hoc test. The treatments were observed to significantly affect the feed and fluid intake, body weight, and fasting blood glucose of the diabetic rats. However, there was no significant change observed in the histology of pancreas.
