General note | This descriptive survey study aimed to establish the relationship between the performance in essay writing through literature of junior high school students of selected private and public schools in Mabalacat and such factors as their, grades in English II, and problems encountered in composition. Specifically, the study sought to establish the profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, educational background of parents, household net income, and favorite reading materials; establish the profile of the final grades obtained by the respondents in English II; find out if there is a significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and their grades in English II; analyze the performance in essay writing of the respondents through literature in terms of organization, logical development of ideas content grammar, punctuation, spelling and mechanics and sty;e and quality of expression, find out if there is a significant difference in the performance in essay writing between private school respondents, between public school respondents, and between private and public school respondents; find out if there is a significant relationship between the performance in essay writing by the respondents and their grades in English II; find out if there is a significant relationship between the respondents' profile and their performance in essay writing. The chosen respondents were 106 junior high school students presntly enrolled in two private and two public institutions in Mabalacat, Pampanga based on their high performance in essay writing competitions. Data analysis was done through documentary analysis. The students read a poem, "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and an essay question was applied in this study. The students were given one hour to compose their essays. The analysis on their performance was based on the students' compositions. Analytic scale for rating compositions tasks by Brown and Bailey (1984) was used as a guide in checking the compositions of the respondents. Statistical formula such as frequency, mean, percentage, T-test, Chi-square, analysis of variance and Pearson Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation were used to analyze the data gathered. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that majority of the respondents were aged 15 years old and females. Majority of the parents attained high school education and earned a net income ranging from P4001-P6000. Majority of the respondents preferred reading books andmost of their grades in English II ranged from 75-80 with low allocation. The profile of the respondents did not affect their grades in English II except for their age. Most of the respondents had serious difficulties in writing compositions. The most number of errors occurred in style and quality of expressions. There is a significant difference in the performance of the students in essay writing between private school respondents; between public school respondents, and between private and public school respondents. The grades obtained by the respondents in English II affected their performance in writing essays. The profile of the respondents did not affect their performance in essay writing except for their age and parents' educational background. Errors experienced by the students in writing compositions can be resolved or minimized by exerting more effort on the part of the English teacher and the students. The English teacher could use variety of methods and techniques in teaching writing and could use some instructional materials to motivate the students in learning how to write essays. |
