This study aimed to establish the hypocholesterolemic potential of spray-dried yacon roots and okra leaves on cholesterol-fed mice. Eighteen white mice randomly assigned to six treatments were used to determine the effect of spray-dried yacon roots and okra leaf extracts on weight, feed intake, water intake, lipid profile, and histopathology of the liver. All animals were given a hypercholesterolemic diet for 28 days. Treatment 0 was assigned as the negative control group receiving only distilled water, whereas Treatment 1 was designated as the positive control group receiving 10 mg simvastatin. Treatments 2 and 3 were treated with 20 and 40 mg yacon extract via oral gavage, respectively. Okra leaf extract at 20 and 40 mg was given to the mice in Treatments 4 and 5, respectively. One-way ANOVA was used to analyze the data, with Tukey's HSD as a post-hoc test. The treatments were observed to significantly affect weight and feed intake of the hypercholesterolemic mice, whereas lipid profile parameters had no significant changes indicating that the dosages of spray-dried extracts of yacon and okra can reduce lipid parameters but only to a certain extent. In addition, histology of the liver showed significant changes and proved the potential of both treatments.
